Right now my hair is kind of long, too long. It just about touches my shoulders and it's annoying me. I want to cut it really short, like a buzz haircut. Is giving myself a haircut possible with it still looking good?
Yes it is very possible to cut your hair and still have it look good your going to need a clipper two mirrors ( so you can look at one to get the back of your head) and a trimmer to clean up your hair line. I cut my hair from time to time if im short on money, but if you have 10-15$ i think its easier to just have someone else do it.Is giving myself a haircut possible with it still looking good?
It is possible to give oneself a short buzz haircut but on most guys, a butch cut-a buzz style where all the hair on the top of the head is cut the same short length by gliding guarded clippers over the scalp-does not fully suit. For a butch to fully suit, the frontal hairline has to be in perfect harmony with the head shape and face shape and for about 95% of guys this is not the case. On the other hand, this does not mean a guy cannot wear a very short buzz style that fully suits, only that more stylized buzz styles require a little more skill than simply guiding guarded clippers over the scalp. A good barber can design one of the short pomp styles-crew cut, ivy league(long crew cut), flat top crew cut-to fully suit most guys head shape, face and neck shape, frontal hairline and facial features. With these styles the hair on the top of the head is graduated longer in length from the back of the crown to the front hairline to allow the short pomp front to readily form when the hair is brushed back off the forehead. The design of the short pomp front allows the head shape, face and neck shape and frontal hairline to be brought into a complementary relationship to form an appropriate frame for the facial features. With hair as long as you have indicated, I would recommend not cutting it any shorter than a regular taper cut with a few inches left on top. Then if you feel comfortable with the much shorter style, go for an ivy league next haircut. Shorter still, a crew cut. A crew cut can get very short on the back/ sides and over the crown and still fully suit as long as the short pomp front is well designed. For instance this Marine Lieutenant's crew cut is nearly shaved to the skin on the back/sides but it graduates to over an inch at the center of the front hairline and suits him well.

With a week to ten day's growth on the back/sides, it will look like a regular short crew cut. However if he were to buzz the entire top with a #2 guard, it would be about 6-8 week's before he had the present length back at the short pomp front. The Lieutenant's crew cut illustrates that the outline of a crew cut approaches the horizontal when the hair is brushed back off the forehead to form the short pomp front and the head is viewed in side profile.
My recommendation is to go for a regular taper cut and then an ivy league and crew cut. This way you get to see your hair in several short styles and will always know that if you feel you have gone too short, a short style that looked great will not take long to grow back to. I do not recommend self buzzing down to a butch since most guys can look their best in a crew cut but not a butch, but if you are determined to do this, here is an answer I wrote that was on ';best of yahoo answers'; for most of November:

Some barbers describe an ivy league as a crew cut just long enough to be parted and combed to the side, if so desired. An ivy league can also be worn with the hair brushed up off the forehead to form the short pomp front, or with the short bangs brushed down on the forehead like a forward brush cut.

Essential barbering knowledge:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Crew_c
Grooming any of the short pomp styles- crew cut, ivy league, flat top crew cut- is basically the same and takes about a minute or two.
1) Towel dry hair.
2) Barely dip fingertips in jar of wax.
3)Transfer wax to palms.
4) Smooth palms over hair.
5)Brush hair off forehead to form short pomp front.
Whichever style you decide on, be sure to take a photo to help describe the desired haircut to the barber or stylist. If you need more photos of any style discussed above, let me know.
Good Luck!
Yeah, I wouldn't take my chances. My mom used to be a hairdresser
and SHE doesn't even cut her own hair... It would probably come out
looking freaky and you will be furious at yourself. Go get it cut by
somebody else for sure.
Yes ... Use clippers ... Grade 4 then you can see if it looks OK b4 going down anymore .... Can always use a basin :-}
Go get it done for sure. It shouldn't cost much. Because you can't get the back of your head and get it all even.
uhhh...why would you wanna mess with it if it looks good? And forgive me for being nosey, but why do so many guys like buzzcuts? I personally think longer hair is sexy.
get a normal hair cut make sure you don't like it that way before you buzz it.
u should cut ur hair like with desings because if u leave it grow there gonna make fun of you and call you hipi
Yea i agree longer hair is sexier!
